NOTE: “Dr. LaNada Boyer (Bannock) is from the Fort Hall reservation in Idaho. As Chair of the Indian student group from UC Berkeley, she coordinated with Richard Oakes in the takeover of Alcatraz Island and maintained a strong leadership role throughout the 19 month occupation. Later she completed her Doctorate of Arts degree in political science as the first member of her tribe to attain a doctorate level education.” –PBS Michael Leach (Colville/Sioux) stand in the boat on the way to Alcatraz Island.
John Trudell speaks with news media representatives regarding negotiations with the federal government for title to Alcatraz Island. Trudell, known as "the voice of Alcatraz," conducted a regular radio program called "Radio Free Alcatraz."Overcoming exhaustion and disillusionment, young Atha Rider Whitemankiller (Cherokee) stands tall before the press at the Senator Hotel. His eloquent words about the purpose of the occupation - to publicize his people's plight and establish a land base for the Indians of the Bay Area - were the most quoted of the day.
