Key Questions
Keep these ‘key questions’ in mind as you go through the content in the three weeks which make up Unit Two.

1. What is the relationship between the periphery and the center regions of the United States? Has there always been a relationship, or did that relationship develop after early exploration?
2. What does it mean to the West (both now and at the time) that the first extended interest in it was centered around an extractive economy? Can the region ever escape that past to become more self-sufficient?
3. If we view Indians as part of nature, and hence timeless and unchanging, how might that affect how we study or write about them?
